Frequently Asked Questions

All products from NŌLA Candles are proudly handmade in small batches in our workshop in Wairarapa, New Zealand. .

NŌLA Candles was founded when Liv struggled to obtain employment with a huge twin belly & so she created a job for herself. She now works diligently in efforts to remain a stay at home mum, squeezing emails and orders in between naps & manufacturing products after bedtime.

Noah & Isla came a little earlier than expected at 34 weeks gestation and so they spent some time in The Neonatal Unit in Wellington Hospital. Because of this, NŌLA has decided to donate 10% of profits to this charity in hopes of helping other families who had similar experiences.

When wooden wicks are having trouble staying lit, this is usually because the wick needs to be trimmed. If problems persist after the wick has been trimmed, please get in contact with us so we can figure out what's going wrong.

If the wick has been trimmed too short, the wax can drown out the flame. If you take a bit of paper towel/tissue and absorb some wax, this should allow the flame to thrive. Please be careful when doing this and do not place the tissue directly over the flame.
If the candle has been burning for a while, this may be because the wick has been burning for too long and needs to be trimmed. Extinguish the flame & trim the wick before relighting (we recommend letting the candle cool before doing so).

No fancy scissors required! Just pinch or crack the charred wood off.

The golden length is 1/4 of an inch or 5-6mm.

Wooden wicks are a much more sustainable option than cotton wicks. Cotton required an astronomical amount of water during production; whereas one tree can produce thousands of wicks. Wooden wicks also burn cleaner, give off a better scent throw and create a cozy ambiance through the crackle sound they give off.

Soy wax, as wonderful as it is, tends to have a memory. What this means is if the candle does not reach a full melt pool on the first burn, it is unlikely to on subsequent burns. As a result, the candle will tunnel. This will reduce the burn time and impact the quality of the candle so we recommend burning your candle for at least 2 hours on the first burn, or until a full melt pool is achieved.

Soy wax has a memory - meaning that if you put the flame out before a full melt pool has been reached, the candle will tunnel the whole way down the candle.

Not only will this impact the quality of your candle, but it will reduce the burn time and mean you miss out on more hours of enjoyment.

We are sorry to hear that your candle is not performing well! If you are not sure why this has happened (a breeze blew the flame out, did not burn for the 2-4 hours at a time, etc.) please get in contact with us so that we can investigate. We are constantly testing our products to make sure they perform amazingly. However, as most of our products are natural ingredients, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans! In these rare circumstances, we are more than happy to issue a new candle.

The best way to ensure your candle does not underperform is to follow the instructions - trim the wick and only burn between 2-4 hours at a time.

This is actually great news that you are burning a toxic-free soy wax candle - the proof is in the imperfections. Soy wax in a natural ingredient and so will tend to look uneven after burning.
